Planned Giving: Leaving a Legacy

Many people volunteer regularly and give financially to the London Humane Society during their lifetimes. They often don’t appreciate, however, that they can continue to make a difference in the lives of homeless and abused animals in years to come through deferred or planned gifts. These are gifts which can be made over time and include life insurance policies, stocks and bonds, real estate, retirement savings plans, assets such as jewellery or works of art, as well as bequests of cash, the most common way that people choose to leave a gift. The Canadian government looks favourably upon charitable giving and Canada’s tax laws offer significant benefits for donors.

Why You Should Make a Will

If you do not make a will, your property and finances will be settled according to provincial laws, and may not coincide with your wishes. When you make a will, you are assuring that your wishes are respected and that your property and family affairs are handled as you have directed. Part of this assurance may involve your desire to make a lasting contribution to a cause you identify with or care about greatly.

How To Make a Gift

  1. Contact your lawyer, accountant or other qualified professional advisor to provide you with sound counsel.
  2. If you wish to name the Society as a benefactor in your will, let your advisor know that our legal name is ‘London Humane Society’. We are a non- profit, charitable organization which was granted a Charter of Incorporation by the Province of Ontario in 1928.
  3. If you already have a will, it is still possible to think of a charitable bequest by adding a codicil or amendment to your existing will indicating your charitable intent. If you prefer, you can consult your advisor about having your will rewritten so as to ensure that all of your current wishes are expressed.
  4. If you would like to gain a better understanding of our work and principles, or if we could offer further information and examples of will clauses, we welcome the opportunity to speak with you or your advisor. All enquiries will be held in strict confidence. Your written or telephone enquiries may be directed to the Executive Director at the London Humane Society.

A Final Word

By remembering the London Humane Society, you help us to sustain the quality of our animal care and protection programs for years to come. Your lasting commitment to the animals ensures the continued success of our efforts to provide our community’s abandoned, abused and neglected animals with a compassionate facility dedicated to their well-being, to act as their advocate respecting them as the living, sentient creatures they are, and to educate our community about their intrinsic value as fellow inhabitants of this world.
