Volunteering for the London Humane Society
The London Humane Society has many volunteer positions available to animal lovers in London and area. Volunteer activities range from brushing cats and walking dogs to working on our fundraising events.**
What's in it for you? In addition to the personal satisfaction of knowing that you're contributing to the well-being of animals, you'll gain valuable experience, contacts, and the pleasure of working with others who also care deeply about animal welfare.
**Please note that some of these volunteer duties are only available as on an "as-needed" basis, so please keep trying back if a spot isn't available at the moment.
Volunteer Opportunities
Please note: volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and be able to perform their duties unsupervised.
Dear Prospective Volunteer:
The London Humane Society would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in our Volunteer Program. Volunteers are essential to the continued success of our shelter. Please note that volunteer positions are available only to those individuals who are 18 years of age or older.
The London Humane Society requires that all volunteer complete an “application form”, general interview and the training session and orientation in their area (s) of interest.
What it means to be a volunteer: Commitment!
We understand that people’s schedules may not always be consistent and that hours of availability may fluctuate, however, we need your commitment to selected programs for our relationship to be mutually beneficial. Volunteers participate in a number of different programs on our behalf and each follow varying timelines. However, in the case of our animal care volunteers, we do require a regular visit to the shelter. A weekly visit is ideal. We would also hope that you have applied with a long-term commitment to the animals in mind.
There are a number of volunteer positions and programs available with our shelter. Some of these programs involve direct contact with the animals in our care, while others are concerned with fundraising and event organization.
Our main annual events are:
Sales and Information Booths are scheduled at community events throughout the city beginning in late spring and continuing through the summer and early fall. Volunteers help us distribute London Humane Society and animal care information. We also sell London Humane Society merchandise such as t-shirts, umbrellas and coffee mugs.
In Shelter Opportunities: Dog Walking, Cat Grooming and Rabbit Care. Positions in these popular programs are available on an “as needed” basis. This need fluctuates throughout the year based on a number of factors. Each position is concerned with the exercise, grooming and socialization of the animals in our care. We need your regular participation in selected programs for our relationship to be mutually beneficial and ask for a weekly visit and a long-term commitment.
We prefer that Dog Walkers members have some knowledge of canine behavior and experience in handling large breeds. These breeds may include German Shepherds, Rottweillers as well as many others. Many of our residents have not received the benefit of training or adequate socialization and require confident as well as caring handling. Please note that all volunteer animal care positions require a scheduled weekly visit. Each area also requires an orientation session where safety, health and handling procedures are outlined. Dog walking volunteers will also be required to attend our Dog Training Sessions.
Hours for Dog Walking:If one or more of these programs appeals to you please contact the Volunteer & Events Coordinator below, who will go over our current needs to see how they match up to your interests and availability. If there is a match between our needs and your area of interest an application will be sent out. Acceptance in any volunteer program will be determined after an interview and orientation session (s) have been conducted.
For further information please see our event listings or call Wendy McNiff, Volunteer & Events Coordinator at 519-451-0630 ext. 222 or email wmcniff@londonhumane.ca
Gifts Of LoveAnother way to help the London Humane Society is to remember the homeless animals at our shelter by giving what we like to call a "Gift of Love". Listed below are several of the most popular ways our supporters have used to help us help our animals find the loving homes they deserve. To find out more about any of these "gift of love" programs please call us at 519-451-0630 ext. 231.
Cage Sponsorships
You can sponsor an animal cage of varying sizes for anywhere from 6 months to a year. Sponsorship costs depend on size of cage and length of time. When you choose to support a homeless animal in this way, a card will be placed on its cage with your name or, if you prefer, your own companion animal’s name as the sponsor. It is also possible to purchase an animal cage and have a permanent plaque acknowledging your gift placed on the cage. Again, costs vary depending of the size of the cage.
Click here for a Cage Sponsorship form.
All Occasion Gift Letters
You can make a donation to help our animals in memory of a person or an animal, in recognition of a birthday, a wedding, anniversary, graduation or retirement, to congratulate a new pet owner on a recent adoption, to commend a dog on successfully completing obedience training, in honour of someone special, or for any special occasion at all. We acknowledge these gifts of love by sending a letter to recipients telling them of your thoughtful contribution to the work of the London Humane Society. Not only does your gift help the many homeless animals living at the shelter, but we are often told the letters we send are highly cherished by their recipients.
'Tis the Season/Christmas Gift of Love
We know it’s not really ‘the season’, but ‘tis the season to be thinking about the season! The Christmas season is not that far away, and we have a great way to help you with the difficult decision of finding a gift for a favoured someone on your list. And best of all, you can help unwanted and abused animals at the same time. These charitable gifts are great for both your human and animal friends. We will acknowledge your seasonal ‘gift of love’ by sending a card to recipients telling them of your thoughtful contribution to the work of the London Humane Society, and wishing them a holiday filled with joy.
United Way Donor Choice Program
More and more people have been making use of the Donor Choice Program available through the United Way. We would encourage you to think of the London Humane Society and the many distressed animals in our care when contributing to the United Way campaign this year. At the same time, you might also want to remind your friends and colleagues of the availability of the program when they consider a contribution to United Way... And to those of you who have supported us in this way in the past, we thank you.
How to Arrange a "Gift of Love"
To arrange for a letter or card to be sent to a special person or animal, we ask that you provide us with specific details, including your name and phone number, the name and full address of the recipient, along with details of the occasion you wish to acknowledge.
Orders may be faxed to 519-451-8995, sent in by e-mail, called in to 519-451-0630 ext. 231, mailed to 624 Clarke Road, London ON N5V 3K5, or you can stop by and give us the details in person, then have a visit with the wonderful animals who are temporarily calling the shelter their home.
